I’ve got a 6 year old one that still runs like a champ!

Why is there always one of you that makes this unoriginal comment? Just let someone, that is genuinely happy about their purchase, enjoy it. Is it that hard? Honestly, is it?

Very nice. The Macbook Pro is the only current Apple product that I’m legitimately enthusiastic about. The iPhone is what it is, and they got rid of the iPod Classic which was a wonderful device, but man the MBP is just a wonderful piece of hardware. Mine is from like 2011 and still running great. Battery life is maybe 2/3 what it used to be but everything else is still tip top.

Because they are a stupid, stupid, stupid waste of money. It’s just hard to watch people throw money away like that..

I’m sure you waste your money on things too. It’s no one’s business how you spend your money. If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say it at all. It isn’t a new or hard concept.

Just out of curiosity, what about journalism/journalistic requirements makes the MacBook Pro so perfect compared to other devices?

I mean, I kinda imagine it being a lot of writing, perhaps processing/editing some pictures or short videos. Those seem like things you can do on any device/OS but perhaps I'm misjudging the profession entirely.

Please do youreslf a favor and invest in a keyboard cover and use gloves to type on it. Even the newest version of the butterfly keys does absolutely nothing to resolve the mistyping and sticking keys issue of the last 2 generations.

Their designed peaked in 2013-2014 when you could self-repair/upgrade.

There are a few factors. Part of it is Apple-proprietary software for video content because apparently a   surprising number of places use Final Cut Pro X. Part of it is that journalism in the digital age is becoming increasingly graphics-intensive and Macs have always been awesome for editing photos and rendering video. There are probably other reasons too, but almost every computer at my college is a PC but every single computer in my lab and newsroom is a Mac and apparently that’s indicative of the industry .

Thanks! The current MacBook Pro is pretty sweet, but my buddy was getting rid of his upgraded late 2011 model at a price that was hard to resist so that’s what I ended up getting . I figure I can spend my savings on car parts.

Yeah, I get that. But theres soo many people that dont udnerstand why they are a totale waste of money and a stupid way to spend money on a pc, it needs to be said. I mean if you could by a civic that was just like any other civic but cost 20k more than a normal civic but it wasn’t 20k more than a normal civic. Then not only is is most expensive but you also can’t work on it with out voiding warranty, you can’t just buy any part you want for it, because they either wont work or you simply can not install them because it will require special tools, and void your warranty. You’d say something right? Because that’ s basically what watching some one buy a Mac feels like. MacOS is also not worth the 1k premium you pay for it. they are stupid and a waste of money.

if thats the case, why did you buy a mac?? haha I kid, I just don’t see their value at all. MacOS is nice, but it’s not a $1,000 OS. I dont care if you do get life time free updates on them. No OS is worth that much. and to be locked into hardware specs is just, well unamerican!

Just like Jalopnik is for the enthusiast, most people buy products with minimal maintenance and are swapping out ram .

What software do you require is voiding an Apple warranty?

What harm would happen to you keeping your nonconstructive opinions to yourself? You obviously have some weird hate for Apple. Sure they are overpriced but they are simple and last. I work on both Windows and Apple’s, while their OS quality has drastically gone done in the quality, are still relatively easy user experience. Most people aren’t running top of the line software on the system and most software is compatible on the Mac’s these days (excluding gaming). I’ll admit the majority of people could get away with a chrome book too, but if ease of use is what they’re going for, Apple has a very seamless user experience especially with their ecosystem connectivity.

who said anything about software voiding warranty?

Some weird hate? It’s not weird, it’s backed by 20 years working in IT and always having some dumb POS insist they need a Mac to do some task a PC is generally better suited for and would be more powerful at a lower price point. Then having to deal with their non compliant BS when trying to add said stupid Mac into our domain environment. There no lack of rational when it comes to my dislike of apple. Fuck closed eco systems, Fuck over priced proprietary interfaces, Fuck over priced OS, fuck it all. Also as for ease of use, they aren’t any easier than PC to use. They are also no more or less secure or prone to malware. Any advantage they once held over pc was Lost over a decade ago. Back when they ran the IBM power CPU’s in the Mac G’s, yeah those bitches had a serious advantage. That gap was closed quickly and Apple conceded when they swapped to Intel. They have been riding that wave of “oh mac is better for X” ever since when in actuality it’s all PR lies and people who adhere to it are nothing more than brand whore justifying paying waaay to much for their systems. then they get all butt hurt when it’s explained to them. Fuck all that! I’m sorry your over priced toy isn’t worth the money or headache to me to deal with, but we got actual work to do rat her than spending way to much time to get your stupid, over price pointless Mac to work in our environment.

I must have misread. Thought you stated software.

But just reading this long tangent you have anger issues you need to deal with. Go cool off and reread your comment. You’re getting upset over something arbitrary.

Most people don’t need power. I can count on a hand how many times I’ve dealt with someone getting Malware on their Apple. I would need a room full of people to count how many times I’ve encountered Malware or the sort on a Windows machine.

I don’t have an Apple computer/laptop. I have a custom desktop that runs windows and a windows laptop for travel (as well as an IBM work laptop). I just can take my bias out and not get upset over someone else’s computer decision.

Kinja'd!!!1

it’s not arbitrary in my world. Macs do not belong in a business environment. They do not play well with others, they cost more than they should so they waste resources and they offer no advantage.

The fact that you point out people dont usually need much power goes futher to the stupidity of buying a mac. Oh hey I’ll buy this low end Mac as I don’t need a powerful computer But I’ll pay the same price as a significantly more powerful windows system. yeah that makes sense.

As for the amount of mac vs windows with malware, it’s all down to the user ratios. based on how many people use windows vs mac, yeah the amount of mac users you’ve encountered with malware would be lower. that’s like saying, You know I know more people with fords that have broken down than I know people with Porsches that have broken down. well yeah there’s more fords being owned and driven. this does not stand as testament to the quality of Porsche , just the amount of them vs fords being used.

I mean hey, in the privacy of your own home, you do you. How ever I will always make sure people know that macs are a waste of money.

I’m also dubious on your ability to really have a foot in this conversation. You claim to have a IBM laptop for work, You’re either running a 15 year old Laptop or you have a Lenovo, which is not an IBM. which come on.. if you’re trying to really debate the merits of hardware systems you should know this guy...

Wether she is the error or the computer wasn’t really the point. I’ll pay more to use an OS I like VS one I don’t.

Hell, I had a nice Alienware for work a little bit ago and still didn’t like the thing. Could definitely tell the difference between it and cheap few hundred dollar machine but the OS still felt clunky.

IMHO they’re like 3800s, work fine for long but never are nice.

I ran a sizeable college as the IT lead which had at least a 1/3rd on macs for the liberal arts school and the rest on Windows. I did that for a decade. I can say the sample population was adequate in my view, but even without that, you can tell by reading it in the news. Windows dramatically outweighed Macs in Malware infection.

You’re extremely biased if you think Macs are getting infected at the same ratio as Windows. While Petya did impact some Mac users, they were a majority by a long shot. WannaCry was Windows only.

You’re right it is a Lenovo, but it was a freudian slip calling it IBM.

I could go on, but I’m over discussing this with a hot head who has a severe bias on this matter. Enjoy sweating the small stuff.

I hate Alienware. they use to be great, then dell bought them. Then dell decided to use bullshit plastics to build them. when I worked in a repair shop we started to refuse to touch their laptops, desktops are fine. but they used the cheapest , most fragile plastics to build their chassis. It was like dude for what they charge they could do better than this. hell even the low end dells has better build chassis . I will say they have sort of fixed the issue, but i hold a grudge on them for that.

the latest builds of windows 10 by the way are very very nice. light on it’s feet and well managed. which is not something I normally feel about MS OS’s. They have definitely been god damn awful in the past.

My late 2012 non retina is pretty upgradeable. I put in a 1tb 2.5 ssd to replace the old 750gb HDD. I can also upgrade the ram from the stock 8gb but I’m hesitant to put any more money into a machine this old. At least with the 2.5 ssd I can put it in an enclosure and keep using it after the rest of the laptop dies.

I’m not sure what I’ll replace this with when the time comes. I really like OSX but I’m not a big fan of the hardware at the moment. I would want another laptop but don’t want fanless (so no MacBook or air) Which leaves the pros. I don’t want the base pro’s because of the only two ports and the dual core and fragile keyboard. Which leaves me with the Touch Bar pros. Which I don’t like because I think the touch bar is a gimmick and I think they are way to expensive.

Ideally I’d like a 14" laptop with a color accurate anti glare screen, discrete GPU for my photo editing, 16 gb of ram and a decent quad core. Which leaves me with things like the XPS 15 (which I don’t really want), Lenovo 720s (topped out). But I don’t want to have to use windows. I can but I prefer OSX.

I’m still a college student so I’m hoping I can just run this laptop for a while but if it dies then I don’t think I’ll be able to afford a new Mac with the specs I want. So it might have to be the Lenovo if this thing dies.
